Cool Blues with Effortless Style

When these clients came to us with their vision of a coastal home, they wanted to stay as far away from the seashells-everywhere, nautical-stripe, shiplap-covered look as possible. In a style we dubbed “elevated coastal”, we worked with them to bring together this subdued, water-hued palette with nods to historic Charleston style that would be as elegant as it is high-functioning.

Opting to keep the focus on form rather than pattern, we selected neutral hues for the furnishings and layered in small prints on rug and ottoman. The resulting effect is a calm, sophisticated space that will stand the test of time. Warm hues in the pine flooring and doors provided a rich backdrop which balanced the cool greys and blues. The lantern and distressed mirror offer a nod to classic design elements of days gone by, while the sleek wingbacks and abstract art round out the transitional look.

When designing for families, we believe practicality and beauty are coequal. Rugs and upholstery need to be able to withstand daily use and inevitable abuse! For this reason, we are huge believers in performance and Crypton fabrics. Hopefully we are preaching to the converted, but if not, just search YouTube for a demonstration of these amazing fabrics’ capabilities (This video, for instance). Many upholstery vendors now offer wide selections of Crypton fabrics in various hands, weaves, and sheen levels that can unite the most discerning design scheme. We are fortunate to live in a day and age where function need not be sacrificed for form because, while we will always have a deep respect and appreciation for fine linens and silk, we understand that “dry clean only” does not work for every installation.
